Subject: [SilverStreak] trailer weight

Does anyone have alternate resources to check the tongue weight and overall
weight of a 1961 SS Rocket, 27'?
According to a trailer brochure I found on the net, it is listed as 4070#
with a hitch weight of 300#. This seems light to me as my Aluminum 2-horse
trailer weights 6000#.
Trailer is at the shop. It was my husband's grandfathers so we haven't
towed it yet and I am wanting to buy an Equalizer on line.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kathy, my 1958 silver streak clipper 23' lists out at 3000# with about
your same tongue weight so your data may be correct. jim -)

Hi Michelle, in my 1958 silver streak clipper, i'm redoing my refrigerator
to a new three way, updating my gas stove and also have installed a new h2o
heater with an opening to the outside. I have also upgraded the gas space
heater controls to include a thermostat. i am extending my original outside and
underneath the unit gas lines to meet these needs and will stabilize the
lines with rubber coated clamps - hoping that this will all work. any thoughts
from others that have already been down this road?? jim -)

Jim,
I know how you feel. There are many questions about the best way to go
with the electrical system.
I for one would not even worry about the 12V part of the frig. They take
huge amounts of juice and it is better to use 120v if you are plugged in or
propane if you are boondocking.
My long term plan is to use the present converter/battery charger and a
deep cycle battery for now and then upgrade the system to a intellipower/gel
cycle battery for the future. The reason I would change is that the gels will
last much longer if you don't overchange them and they can be stored inside
the trailer, which helps in cold weather camping.
Living in Wyoming and wanting to spend as much time at high altitude and
away from camp grounds means I will try to make my systems use less juice and
still have a working battery. A week away from plugging in will be my goal,
when I can get to that goal is the question.

Michelle,
On my Silver Steak (made in 1969) the gas line under the trailer is black
steel pipe, it then changes to copper tube when it goes thru the floor. Any
and all fittings should be checked with soapy water for bubbles when you turn
it on. More than one RV has been blown to smithereens by a propane leak.
Especially make sure that the disconnected water heater and furnace lines
have been plugged off when those appliances were removed.

I'm not sure "any" wool would be good. I think it would scratch the surface
rather than polish it. Tom has recommend a soft abrasive before but I can't
remember the name of it. Just think what steel wool does to the side of a
nice shiny cooking pan. (no more shine).....but then maybe I'm wrong... good
luck.

Kathy,

Hitch weight is usually around 10%, according to official records a 1962
Avion 27ft had a dry weight of 3360lbs, your 4000+ figure could very well be
the gross. One of the truly wonderful things about the trailers of the 50's
and 60's is how light they are, water tanks were smaller and there were no
gray water tanks in that period.

Jim and Joe,

I find that a small solar battery charger works very well to keep my battery
up when not in use and helps to "extend" our stand alone time, especially if
you are out of the trailer during the day. Harbor Freight Tools sells one
that is fairly cheap with the charge controler built in. You can catch it
on sale for about $20. It has a 12 volt plug, I ran my wire in from the
roof vent and lay the solar cell on the roof. Or you could add clamps and
go directly to the battery.
Good luck,

James Day

Our 1961 SS Rocket-27', is in the RV shop getting some work after sitting
for 18 years.

The RV Store had trouble finding seals for the wheel bearings. Finally they
did but they really had to search.

Where does everyone else find these seals for their older SS?

Thanks for the question. i understand that the steel wool fibers will get
imbedded into the aluminum and then thru electrolysis wil start to turn black,
leaving many little black spots in the aluminum finish. i did use steel
wool for light paint removal but since have vigorously rewolled using aluminum
wool and so far can't see any harm that i did. i have a source for aluminum
wool if anyone is interested. jim -)

without scratching but also used plenty of liquid paint remover along with it and a

try a little 0000 steel wool some time on a chromed surface...even without any
polish. It will shine it quite nicely and not leave any scratches. I used 0000
steel wool and 409 to do a first wash on my SS that had not been washed in
years...did a pretty good job.
