Thank-you for letting me join your list.

Our 1961 Silver Streak Rocket was originally owned by my husband's
grandparents and has not been used for over 20 years. Now that my husband is
in his late 50's and we are starting to plan our retirement years, we have
decided to rebuild the SS for our own use. My husband was born in Boulder,
Colorado so I imagine we will always live here.

It is not in too bad a condition but we have yet to really look at the
workability of the appliances.

I do need advice on some questions right now:

1) How do you clean the outside Aluminum?
2) We are looking at an Equalizer Hitch. We will be pulling with a 3/4 ton
Dodge Diesel Pick-Up. I am trying to find a source to buy this hitch at a
discounted rate. Our RV store has quoted me a price of $539 plus tax.
Anyone know of a bargain store that can beat this price?

Again, thank-you for letting us join as we go down this new road of
restoration.

Welcome to the silver streak group. i'm also a struggling member working on
a 1958 clipper. the main lesson that i learned the hard way is to only use
aluminum wool if you need to rather than steel wool. i can provide a source
if you need it. jim -)

Hi Kathy, Greetings from your neighbor to the South! (Colorado Springs)!
I have a 1958 Silver Streak Jet that we'll be taking on the road in a
little over a week. I found my Streak right on Tom Pattersons site nearly
two years ago. Can't wait to get camping! Congrats on your 1961 - I'm
sure you'll really enjoy it! Kathy, there's a company right in Denver
that sells via ebay. They have one listed right now for $190.00 - if you
can get to it, here's the web address of the one they are selling:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4556895305&category=50072I
have NO idea as to the quality, but they have really good feedback, so
can only assume it's pretty good. I'm not sure about the cleaning of
yours. There is, however, yet another resource in Denver that I
would assume would be happy to guide you. His name is Brett, and he has
a trailer restoration company right next door to you
(practially). His web address is:
http://www.timelesstraveltrailers.com/index.html Anyway - hope this info
helps, Kathy! Steve

WOW! Two 1958 responses in a row. I'm kinda new to this board as well
and just about to get into the restoration of a 1958 SS Chico. Just like
Kathy's, this has been in the competent hands of my grandparents. Can't
wait to get her on the road! I'm sure I'll be seeking a little advise here
and there before that happens though.

Cool! '58 was a good year, apparently! :-) Welcome to the club! The Chico
is apparently a really, really rare model - I've heard of a handful, but
there's not much out there about them. You all may (or may not...) find
some helpful pictures and such at my website:
HTTP://WWW.THESL8S.COM/SILVERSTREAK where I've posted a lot of
restoration pictures, etc. If you have the louvered windows and the
little seal on the left and right sides is about shot - I CAN HELP. Been
there, done that yesterday (all day) and installed some new fuzzy seals
that look great (and should work) great. Plus, the "Lip" seal at the
bottom and top of each window will soon be available from
airstreamdreams.com - they told me to give them a few weeks. All the
seals around my louvered windows were shot - so can't wait to get the
original style "lip" seals. Anyway - send pics!!! Steve

Subject: [SilverStreak] Propane line under trailer?

We are still deciding what elements to leave in the interior of our 32'
Continental and are debating the safety of leaving the original gas lines
in the SS. The original gas stove/oven is still connected to the main gas
line, as is the electric/gas fridge. But the gas heater under the stove,
and the hot water heater are no longer functional and the gas line has been
disconnected to the hot water heater. The propane bottles at the front of
the trailer don't have much in them, but they've been shut off at the bottle
and the rubber hose disconnected from the trailer.

With half the fixtures disconnected from the gas lines, is it safe to hook
the stock propane tank up to the main gas line?

And, does anyone know whether the propane line between the stove and the
main gas line is rubber or metal? How likely is it for the fittings/line
to rot or corrode?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this, Michelle
