Re: [SilverStreak] Vintage Trailer Supply - rivets

Ralph,
I have not yet removed a hinge so I don't know. Hopefully they are 5/32 as
that is what I have. I don't know of any other choice to do the installation
other than the Olympic rivets. Maybe someone else has an alternative but I
can't think of one. I did go to the Rivetnut tool site and the Bylerrivet
site, and they were still there. The rivitnuttool site was much better than
before. The Byler site was totally different than before.

I was purged at Byler. I re-registered and then again put one shaver in my
cart. The result was that my request for a quote was submitted. There were
no other choices, no way to buy or get a price. It also seemed like they
were trending and may already be wholesale only. I do not know if the
contact person and email I provided is still good. When I bought, I got
price incentives for the rivets and the rivet pliers tool. It seems to me
the site was typical with prices and quantity at the time. As I recall, the
rivets came in pre-packed quantities of choice with larger quantity bags
reducing the per piece cost.

Back then, Tom Patterson's place of purchase referral was still the best
price, at least I am pretty sure that is where I learned of it, but maybe
that is no longer true. Your question is important since there are
apparently at least two sizes of this brand of tool. The other brand will
apparently do two sizes, 1/4" being one of the sizes. The other tool
apparently will do only the one 5/32 size.

I'm sure others and myself would appreciate what you finally determine to be
the best source. It may be VTS now. I have not checked the net, epay, or
amazon.

Please remember me on your old hinges. I have ordered the very special
welding rods. They are due in this coming week. I can't remember where you
are, but if you are in Houston you are welcome to borrow my shaver without
any feeling of responsibility or obligation. The tool is very heavy in
construction in the nature of any high-quality machinist tool. It needs
maintenance of it's shaft and bearing surfaces, but nothing extraordinary,
and the shaving tip will occasionally need to be flicked clean of aluminum
build up until you learn to keep slow rpm. Like any machinists bit, it is
black metal and needs a dry environment or thin coat of oil.
