Re: [SilverStreak] replacing the hot water heater - 66 Sabre

Jason,
Do whatever you have to do inc rebuilding or purchasing a new
water tank, 'fire tube', etc. Above all do not abandon the original
unit w/ it's much larger 'fire tube allowing for a far superior
recharge time.

Rebuild and add an electric heater element to the new tank, if
you wish !

The RV center was untruthful saying it was impossible to rebuild
the original unit. Fortunately I was skeptical refusing to allow them
to trash the old unit as they strongly suggested...
Later I visited a quality sheet metal shop who said, "bring it in,
we'll rebuild to good as new". Shortly the orig will be reinstalled.

The brand new unit takes FOREVER to heat a tank of water as the
fire tube is appx 1/3 the size of the original, the orifice jet as well.
The new unit heated a cold tank in appx 45 min, the original in
appx 10 min !
The new unit allows little more than a 'spit shower' while the
original could almost maintain a constant multiple person shower
w/o intermittent time to reheat.

The door to the new Atwood water heater was a different size,
thus a different color and not near the quality of the original.

This is my experience, other's may not agree.
If you wish addn info, I can ablige.

Thanks,
lea pugh
