Last time I looked a "2x4" was 1=" x 3=". 3/4" was 11/32". It's what is used in decent 
quality houses for subflooring. Over it is another 3/4" traditional hardwood or 
particle/waferboard for carpet.

Bob Ashby's advice was to close the skin vents (with weatherstrip rope caulking) 
in cold climates.
