Instead of PVC consider PEX. It is rather freeze resistant especially if the system 
is not pressurized when subjected to freezing. Crimp tools are a little expensive 
($100+) but the store you buy your PEX supplies from may loan you one, as the store 
I bought my supplies from did.

Non-crimp fittings are also available but are expensive and much bulkier than crimp 
ring type fittings.

Should use the same brand of pipe, fittings, crimp rings and crimp tool throughout 
if possible.
