What I use is that "non slip" stuff that comes in sheets. Simply cut squares large enough to cover the plates (or whatever) and place a sheet between each dish, plate or whatever. The non slip keeps the dishes from sliding out of place and has enough padding to stop most breakage. I admit to loosing two plates last year, but considering the road (pot holes) that day, I expected to loose much more than that! No warning, just 3 big holes with nowhere to go.
