Although the axle looks solid, it's actually a hollow tube. There's a bunch of
rubber stuff inside, so you definitely don't want to weld on it either.

That tube will apparently stand a certain amount of pressure from a jack; I don't
think I've hurt mine. If you do decide to jack on the tube, do so as far 'out' as
you can get so that you're jacking only half the weight. Also, it might be well to
use a board or something to kinda distribute the load on the axle tube so as to not
crush it.
