With all the responses about water pressure regulators I am surprised
that many of the List folks always hook-up to the city water. Although
I have a city water intake (with a built-in regulator and an external Marshall
Brass with adjustable pressure guage and meter), I prefer to fill my 40
gal. water
tank and run the water from there. The reasons for this include the
personal preference of begining each trip with "my own" water, always having
water with me and not depending on a campgrounds water supply and avoiding
freezing any external water hoses, etc.
With three children we typically have to refill about every 3 to 4 days but I try to be select in the water I refill with by first visually inspecting and second, tasting, water before I refill the tank. Now obviously is we are going to be in a spot for a week or more, and the water tastes aceptable, I will hookup. However, I still turn the water off at the spigot before we leave for the day when I am hooked up in these situations. I have just seen and experienced too many failures and/or broken seals, etc. to want to deal with a leaking hose, etc.
I have found that the water quality at campgrounds is largely unregulated
and unchecked. I have camped in many campgrounds where the water was just
mud colored with the taste to prove it. In fact, at last years International
Rally, I fond the water extremely poor tasting such that I went and bought
a couple of cases of spring water for about 25 cents/gal. And yes I
have both an external water filter and an internal filter (Everpure) but
have still found poor quality water.
The bottom line that I have found is that it is safer to depend on your own water tank and system as opposed to external mysteries.
