What I don't understand is what does the one that's installed in the Airstream for? Does it just not work?

It works fine (at least, mine does) but does not protect the hose between  the supply tap and the RV. The external regulator also offers peace of mind  -- in the unlikely event the one inside the trailer fails, your pipes won't burst. Given the difficulty of access to fix burst pipes, that seems to me important. I had a 20 year old "T" fitting fail the other day (not due to overpressure, nor to freezing, just old plastic) and am still trying to figure out how to gain access to replace it. I'll probably have to remove the stove, and some sheet metal panels behind it. Not ready to start yet, because many of the pop rivets were placed from the "wrong" side when the unit was assembled, and it's not obvious how to replace them once drilled out -- not obvious how to get the rivet gun into the right place.
