Hartwell, you're correct on both counts. The auto makers sell us more
than we will ever use. For instance, the auto transmissions have several
gears; yet, most people never take it out of Drive, except to put in into
Park. So, why did we pay for the Fist and Second gears. Yes, many
drivers are lazy and refuse to use their left legs to clutch through the
manual transmissions. As a driver trainer for new 18-wheel drivers,
I disqualified numerous students because they insisted that they "float"
the shifters through the gears rather than use the clutch. Many big
rig drivers never use the clutch because "it is easier to float" through
the gears. So, I ask, "why did the engineers at
Cummins design the transmissions with a clutch to be used with a transmission?"
