Airstream actually changed from the old, rather successful clear coat,
and went to a new product. The old supplier of clear coat went out of
business. When the new stuff immediately started to fail Airstream
bought up the old formula, mfg'd it themselves, but couldn't get it
right for a long time. I've been told this story by enough folks in the
know that I suspect it is true.
