this did happen to me about 12 years ago. I was hauling two horses at the time, with a borrowed old pickup truck. about 3 miles from the barn, on a flat (thank GOD) stretch of road, the ball snapped right off. the horses were fine, but very shaken up as you can imagine, and it took some care to get them out of the very forward tilting trailer. I've never felt comfortable hauling animals, and that trip didn't help my nervousness!
