Hi, Hunter,

I watched a breakaway happen right in front of me just outside of Yakima on I-82. A young couple in a motorhome were towing a ski boat at freeway speeds about half a mile in front of me. Suddenly I became aware that the boat and trailer were drifting toward the shoulder all by themselves, and the couple didn't even know it. They were motoring on. About the time I passed the boat, it was settling gently as could be into a big thicket of high grass in a marshy area just next to the freeway. After a bunch of horn-honking and random gesturing from several people passing the couple in the  motorhome, they pulled over. You should have seen the look on their faces.

About two hours later, when I passed the area going the opposite direction I saw a large tow truck yarding the boat, still on its trailer and looking totally undamaged, out of the weeds and back onto the road. This looked to be a new or nearly new rig, so I wondered what happened. I think they lost the
pin on their receiver, allowing the ball to slide out. Like not having the safety chains crossed and attached to the hitch frame, how many times have you seen the cable for the breakaway switch attached to the ball? All three must be attached to the frame, and I think those very fortunate people learned that the hard way.
