The only time it happened to me was within 10 miles of home. The bolt which attached the ball to the hitch "sheared off". The only reason I could find was metal fatigue. There was some signs of rust at
the break sight, but no scuff marks below the ball, making me think that the ball had not been loose until just before it broke.

The final result was that the leading edge of the hitch socket has a small dent in the lower edge. The brakes worked GREAT, meaning the trailer never touched the Suburban and there was no feeling of loss of control. Speed at the time was about 45 mph, thank goodness and luck that traffic was heavy keeping the speed down. The trailer never even left the traffic lane until it followed me onto the shoulder.

Do "breakaways" happen often? Has it ever happened to anyone on this list?
