I use a step ladder when I can. If this won't work I'll use an extension ladder that is wrapped with towels where it comes in contact with the trailer. I've been on top on occasion and I try to stay where there is a support frame underneath, (where there are rivets). On my large Airstream I have awnings on both sides and when they are rolled up they make a nice ladder support.
