I agree, I don't care for the carpeting concept in our Airstream. With twin
12 year old girls and a dog, it could get pretty shabby looking in a hurry.
It's a 1994 and the previous owner, which was a retired couple, took
immaculate care of her. I noticed the previous owner had 2 rugs on the
floor. I tried placing 4 rugs throughout the trailer but as soon as someone
came inside the rugs weren't where they were originally placed. What I ended
up doing was going to a fabric store and buying that heavy clear vinyl some
may use to make covers for outdoor furniture. I bought about 8 yards and
taped and cut it out to fit exactly over the entire floor of the trailer,
even goes into the bathroom. I did not tape any of it to the trailer or
carpet though. That could leave a sticky residue in time. At the front end,
where the sofa is, I bought those aluminum strips you put over the edges of
linoleum. They are about 4 feet long and about 1 inch wide, silver color with
screw holes about every 6-8 inches. I cut the vinyl a little long in front of
the couch, rolled the aluminum strips a couple times with the vinyl and
screwed the strips, with the vinyl wound on it, onto the floor as close to
the sofa as possible. This now keeps the vinyl from moving around due to
walking or the nap of the carpet. And holds the vinyl tightly to the floor
that it doesn't interfere with opening the sofa drawer. I still lay a couple
rugs down, just cause I don't like the feel of the vinyl in the middle of the
night when getting up. But, the carpet underneath looks new. Hope I didn't
get too confusing here. But found this to work well for us. All in all, I
too wish we had wood or linoleum floors.
