The two principle types of brake controllers out there are inertia and
preprogrammed. But, like many other things in the RV business there are
several other very clever and effective options. Of the predominate ones
I prefer the inertia over the preprogrammed. The preprogrammed (e.g.
Drawtite and Reese) send out a predetermined amount of brake current
based on time. No consideration is made for how much you need it or how
fast. Not a universal answer to me. The inertia systems (e.g. Hayes Wheels
and Tekonsha) apply current dependent on changes in forward
momentum. They start working as soon as you touch the brake pedal with
a small current. That's how they can start to apply trailer brakes before
tow vehicle. When going downhill the pendulum swings forward slightly making
the controller more sensitive while going uphill the pendulum swings back
slightly making it less sensitive. The controllers can be difficult to
adjust occasionally. Over the years I have had hydraulic and electronic
brake controllers. I prefer the electronic. The new Jordan sounds very
intriguing. I have not had a chance to see one up close and personnel so
will withhold comment beyond that. And yes Kelsey is the old company that
made wheels and such in the old days.
