Bryum:
For carpet stains try using just plain water in a small spray bottle. Wet stain and use a dry cloth, blot and lightly rub stain, turning cloth so you have a clean surface to accept stain material and not rubbing stain into carpet. Trouble with carpet spot removers is that they leave a residue of cleaning solution (detergent) on the carpet which acts as magnet to dirt and the spot will often show dirty again. However, when you do use spot removers go over a second time with clean water as a rinse and blot/wipe up with dry cloth.
