Hi Rob -

I tow a '66 26' Overlander (with full tanks and misc. stuff it is probably about 5000#) with a '97 Expedition with the 4.6L engine, towing pkg, 3.55, and 17" wheels. It has plenty of power on moderately hilly terrain, but I don't think I'd want to take it over the mountains. That combination has a tow rating of 6000#.

According to my 1999 towing guide from Trailer Boat magazine, the F150 4x2 w/5.4L, towing pkg, 3.55, weight dist. hitch, and 16" wheels has a tow rating of 8300#. The 4x4 is rated at 7900#.

The F150 (assuming an extended cab) has a longer wheelbase than the Expedition which should improve stability somewhat, and with the addition of the extra power of the 5.4L should make a great towing package.
