I've been using a GV in ElFordo (T-6, 4:11, 460) for five years now. It has a lot going for it. However, cooler tranny fluid isn't one of the advantages. As a matter of fact, IMHO, it's quite likely to be hotter unless you are dilligent about shifting out of OD when the RPMs start to go up and the speed doesn't. ie., when you're pulling slight grades. A tachometer is a very useful instrument to have when one uses an OD such as a GV.

With my T-6 and GV I have SIX good, useable ratios. This fact alone means I have a ratio for just about any occasion and the entire rig is more drivable on that account.

The GV is a license-built unit based closely upon the Leycock d' Normanville (spelling uncertain) unit that has been used in countless sports cars, for example. It is rugged and reliable and shifts quite positively. It is, in essence, 1/2 of the "forward" part of a hydramatic. Or maybe much the same as a model "T" tranny . . .

It's a great old idea.

Increased fuel economy . . . havn't seen it here--not under towing conditions, anyway.

Reduced engine noise . . . absolutely.

The cost when I installed mine was $1750, delivered to my doorstep by an outfit called McAllen Fuel Injection in McAllen, TX. I installed it myself, but I am comfortable with the idea of ripping the guts out of my machinery any old time I want to. The only modification is to have the driveshaft shortened. Also, I was obliged to get a conversion U-joint (NAPA.) They cost about twice what a straight-thru U-joint costs and I carry a spare because they aren't available just everywhere.

Am I happy with it and would I do it again? Absolutely.

See above. I doubt that you can still get a GV for that price, however. GV and USG both are good machines. Not being a GM man, I cannot answer that.

On retirement:

Ain't it fun, 'tho? Been retired for a few years now and just cannot imagine punching a clock (either actual or symbolic) again.
