What are the approximate quality of service parameters for data communication over this medium? I am talking about things like bitrate (both directions), latency and typical error rate
Sigh. OK, now you're gonna make us all hate the idea of using ham radio!

Fact is, ham radio digital circuits are EXTREMELY slow (when compared against modern day phone line communications).

If I told you HOW slow, you'd gag, puke, choke, and otherwise laugh your way right off the list.

On ... the ... other .... hand, remember that it's free. There are no charges for the medium itself, and no charges for the services. And ... when you're out boondocking a hundred miles from the nearest phone, "FREE" is good.  Free is very very good.

And in defense of free, insanely slow RF circuits like we have to endure, it's important to remember that there are dozens and dozens of modes that we use. Some have NO error correction, such as radio teletype and various voice modes, while others have infinite (and adaptable) amounts of it.

So... your unstated point is well taken. Thanks for being kind about the way you worded the question! ((grin)))
