This may have been discussed before (just recovering from a little mail problem).

What are the approximate quality of service parameters for data communication over this medium? I am talking about things like bitrate (both directions), latency and typical error rate. What I am getting at is: under normal circumstances, what would be the effective goodput of traffic? 100bit/s? 1000bit/s? Or does it come close to cell phone like 4.8Kbit/s?

Those of you dialing in over modem probably run at something like 25-40Kbit/s on the average.
