It is probably safe enough to give it a try (carefully). It does seem likely the tongue weight may be on the heavy side for just dropping it on the ball but that will become quickly apparent. Anything over 300 to 400 lbs is probably going to want a load equalizing hitch. Keep in mind not using an equalizing hitch not only takes weight off the front wheels but will also point your headlights high enough to cause oncoming drivers problems. Another possible problem is the trailer may be quite a bit off level which will make it inconvenient on the road and also may allow the fridge to defrost when stopped.

All in all I would still recommend anyone use a Reese or similiar equalizing hitch and consider some form of sway control.

I am assuming my memory is correct that a caravel is somewhere in about the 18 foot category.

The tongue weight on my 70 Globetrooter, 21 ft, single axle is close to 800 lbs so don't be surprised if the tongue is heavier than expected. (or advertised).

There should be no need for anything fancier than the typical equalizng hitch.

If you do purchase a hitch, keep in mind it that the head, bars etc are a lifetime investment so the cost gets spread over many years.. I have been using some of the same stuff for over 30 years, and I got it used.

Hope this helps a little.
