I use a form of Amateur Radio called HF Pactor.

Just a few moments ago, I sent a message from this computer to an internet address, using a radio modem called a Pakratt 232, an HF radio (Kenwood TS-430S) and a simple wire antenna. People can also reply via the internet and I can pick up the message via radio. (About $1200 worth of equipment excluding computer). This system was designed by hams primarily for other hams cruising on boats, but RVers are welcome to use it too. In my case the radio hop was from Springfield, MO to Nashville, TN but there are cruising sailors regularly check in from the Mediterranean. KE5RK, who wrote the "airmail" program is currently cruising there on his 50' Sloop "Heart of Gold", and he checks into the Nashville station daily by direct HF radio.

"Airmail is an easy to use e-mail program that is sort of like Eudora for radio use. You type in the internet message and decide what gateway station you want to send it through, then dial up the frequency on your radio and hit send.

The rest is automatic.

As far as I can tell, about 1/3 of the members on this list are hams, so you won't have any trouble getting advice on this subject.
