I replaced the stock speakers in my '70 with the so-called "bookshelf" size speakers that would fit where the stockers had been. The improvement, particularly the bass response, was very apparent and worthwhile. The original speakers were interesting things where the cones were made out of styrofoam (I kid you not) but they had become quite unsatisfactory.

I find that a very modest amount of power is all that is necessary in the confines of S. Slug. However, I value my hearing (what I have left of it after 12 years in/around B-52's) and do not require the window-rattling racket that some seem to enjoy. In my case, ten watts per side is more than enough.

Everything fits very nicely, with lots of room for other things, in the front overhead cabinet. That is where AS installed the original system. (Long since gone to its final reward . . . )

While I didn't go this route (because of equipment I already had) I think that if I had to install something new it would be an automotive-style sterio of medium-good-or-perhaps-a little-better quality. This sort of thing seems to be quite reasonably priced these days. I would eschew the use of 115vac equipment simply because of the limits it imposes. Sometimes I like to listen to music while I'm in the boonies.
